Overview of the City

The city of Hakodate is a "fishery city" that is surrounded by three seas and boasts some of the highest volumes of fish landings nationwide. Since being opened as the first international trading port in Japan, the city has developed a cityscape overflowing with exoticism and a rich food culture featuring both western and Chinese cuisine.





The city is located at the southern end of Hokkaido on the southeastern part of the Oshima Peninsula. The unique topography is sandwiched on both sides by the sea.
